York has so many opportunities for students, and not just academic ones. We have a variety of extracurriculars, including choir, orchestra, countless sports, and yearbook. But one of my personal favorites is backstage for theatre.
Before I was even attending York, I came to see one of the shows: Pippin. I was immediately entranced by the beautiful costumes and wonderful acting. Once I was in my eighth grade year at York, I was a little shy, and didn’t push myself to try many new things, like theatre. But I attended all the plays that year, and fell even more in love with them. The sets, the makeup, the lighting—the entire world of theatre spoke to me.
So the next year, when I was a freshman, I forced myself a little out of my comfort zone and signed up to do props for the shows. This turned out to be a pivotal moment that has made a huge impact on my life. I have made close friends, and have learned a lot about theatre in general. I love doing props! I always want to start meeting with the group as soon as a show is announced, even if it isn’t necessary. The process of creating the props we need out of what seems like nothing makes me think in different ways and try new things.
I have loved all the shows York has put on since my eight grade year, and now that I’m involved in the process, I love them even more. And this year’s winter play isn’t any different. Our most recent show, Orlando, transcends time, and makes one think about gender roles and heartbreak. It is one of my favorites shows I’ve seen at York.
Since starting props, I have become even more involved with the theatre program at York, and this year I challenged myself by joining the acting class, where I was onstage instead of behind the scenes. Sometimes it was difficult, but I grew to love the class, and I am so grateful I took the chance. I also just went on the trip to the Ashland Shakespeare Festival during spring break. Taking advantage of opportunities given to you can be life changing. I know it was for me.
