With a cry of exuberance I throw down my pencil and run out of the classroom in a flurry of homework papers. The sound of music blaring leads me to the Commons, where I join a group of friends sitting on the warm grass. We pass around snacks and cheer for classmates as they participate in a lively round of musical chairs. Laughter echoes across campus and pulls people from empty classrooms, luring students out of the classrooms and releasing them into a week of sun and fun.

Cheering from the soccer field attracts a crowd to join in a rousing match of “Capture the Heart,” the Valentine’s day equivalent of capture the flag. Students race across the green expanses, dodging, ducking, and twisting, urged on by the whoops of the student body president as he raises his bullhorn high into the air.

School spirit reaches its zenith as the week reaches its close. Costumed students fill the commons with noise, while paper lanterns add to the festive feel. Laughter rings out as students admire one another’s creativity, delighted to be participating in a spirit day called “meme day.”

In the shade of the breezeway a long line slowly winds its way through the Chinese room, feasting on a delicious potluck lunch in celebration of Chinese New Year, welcoming in the year of the dog.

The laughter, the bright colors, the cheerful camaraderie of the people around me; I am surrounded by the spirit of York. Students taking a break from studying to enjoy being in the present moment and appreciate the simple pleasures in life. A handful of chocolates, a homemade valentine, a rare week of sun in February. The pure joy that comes from laughing with friends and putting cares aside to make memories that will last for a lifetime.
