Grade: 11 - Class of 2019

Previous School: Junipero Serra

Every year, the Junior State of America holds 3 conferences for students all around northern California. Spring State is coming up in San Francisco, but the Winter State conference that was held in February is the one I like the best. We go to California's capitol building and debate in the same rooms used to write our state laws. Students write bills about whatever topic they want and try to get them passed- last year, my friend and I passed a law banning child beauty pageants.

Throughout the year, the York JSA club meets at lunch to have less formal debates. JSA debates have allowed me to question my political beliefs and think about complex philosophical ideas like the future of humanity, what natural rights we are given as humans, or whether dogs are better than cats. I can't wait until the Spring State conference, and I know York students will return with countless awards and happy memories.
