A College-Prep, Independent Day
School for Grades 8-12

Instrumental Music

York School offers many opportunities for students to participate in both open and select vocal and instrumental ensembles. They may also be used to fulfill the University of California’s Visual and Performing Art (UC VPA) entrance requirement. Students in York music ensembles are eligible to participate in honor ensembles at the local, state, and national levels. More information about the ensembles, practice schedule, and how to sign up will be available the first week of school.

Students in grades 10 - 12 may enhance their music education experience by taking Advanced Placement Music Theory.

Directed by Noah Reeves
All students with basic proficiency on a wind, brass, or percussion instrument are eligible to participate in Band. Placements are held at the beginning of each school year. Rehearsals take place three days per cycle at 7:40 a.m. - 8:25 a.m. Students will perform at Fall Fair, Winter Concert, Spring ‘Festival of the Arts’ and Graduation.

Strings Ensemble

Directed by Noah Reeves
The Orchestra is open to all string players with basic knowledge of their instruments; skilled players occupy the top chairs. Advanced wind and brass players are invited to join them when the repertoire requires. The Band and Orchestra work together on symphonic band repertoire. There is often an opportunity for a keyboardist to participate in the Orchestra on piano or harpsichord.

Jazz Band

Directed by Eddie Mendenhall
Jazz at York is swinging. Ensembles can range from a combo of five players to a big band of 25 or more. The horn positions are open to all students with basic knowledge of their instruments and all instruments are welcome, not just the traditional “jazz” instruments. The rhythm section is crucial to the success of the group; those who play piano, guitar, bass, and drums need to be experienced and are selected by audition.

Jazz Ensemble is open to all instrumentalists; every attempt is made to accommodate students at their present level of ability. Jazz Ensemble rehearses three days per cycle at 7:40 a.m. to 8:25 a.m. Jazz Ensemble has the opportunity to play at the ‘All About York’ event, Winter Concert, Annual Gala, and Spring ‘Spring Arts Festival’.
