The York Fund

York depends on the generosity of its parents, alumni, and friends for financial support every year. Gifts to The York Fund provide immediate support for various aspects of the academic program, student life, and faculty development.

Your contribution, of any size, helps fund:

  • Teachers who are passionate about their subjects and creative in their delivery,
  • Exciting curriculum that engages and challenges students to think differently,
  • Music, art, and theater programs that foster creative expression, and
  • Sports teams with room for players of all abilities.

You might be wondering . . .

Why does York ask for donations when parents already pay tuition?

In reality, every York student receives a subsidy each year because York School charges less in tuition than its actual costs. The School’s tuition revenue only covers about 80 percent of the operating budget. The balance is made up each year with generous donations from people like you.

We receive financial aid from York. Are we expected to participate as well?

On the surface it seems paradoxical to donate to a school that is offering you financial assistance. However, a broad level of participation in giving to the school makes our financial aid program possible. We don’t expect large donations from those with tight budgets, but their participation in giving inspires those who can keep our financial aid program strong. In fact, those who receive financial aid from York have a great incentive to give back.

Why not raise tuition and do less fundraising?

One of York’s primary goals is to provide the highest quality education to any qualified student, regardless of economic background. If we raised tuition, many families would be unable to send their children here. Above all else, the diverse group of students makes this school extraordinary. They define our unique culture, and raising tuition would mean changing the student body. Without them, we wouldn’t be York.

What about grants from foundations and corporations? Why not ask them?

We do. We solicit foundations and corporations on a regular basis. Your annual gift sends a powerful message to corporations and foundations who view participation as a key gauge for awarding grants; York School is more likely to receive funding from outside sources if it can show strong support from our families.

How much should I give?

Whatever your circumstances, thoughtfully consider the influence of York School on you and your family, and give as generously as you are able. As a small school, the success of our fundraising depends on each and every one of us. Setting up a recurring gift (monthly, quarterly, or bi-annual payments) is one way to spread your gift over the course of the academic year. You can do this using the online giving form or by contacting Michelle Lange, Advancement Services Coordinator at 831.373.4438 x114.

How does York School recognize its donors?

Our donors are thanked every year in our Impact Report. Leadership donors (those donating $1,500 or more annually) are invited to special events on campus throughout the year.

Donors in our Constance H. Bishop Society have a chance to meet their scholarship student and also receive updates on the student's progress.

Finally, the Fideles Society is our way of recognizing those donors who have given for five or more consecutive years.

Still have questions?

These are some of the most common questions we hear, but you may have others. Please contact Susan Wolfe, Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, at 831-373-4438 x151 or swolfe@york.org for more information about your donation to The York Fund.
