Board of Trustees

York’s Board of Trustees includes alumni, parents of alumni, current parents, and members of the local community who had no previous connection to York but who were attracted to the School by its record of achievement, its welcoming culture, and its commitment to serve students from a range of backgrounds.

Our trustees believe in the value of a York education for individual students, their families, and our communities.


Ellen Gaucher, Chair of the Board, parent of a current York student and a 2015  graduate, is the CFO and Co-Owner of utility coordination firm Gaucher & Associates.  She is an advocate in the community for education and helped open and grow the International School of Monterey (ISM). Ellen's myriad of experiences also include a background in corporate catering and hospitality management. She joined the Board in 2017.

Marianne Gawain ’76, Vice Chair of the Board, is a former public utilities regulator, and is an active school and community volunteer. She joined the Board in 2011 as a member of the Advancement Committee and currently serves as Co-Chair of that committee. She previously served as Secretary of the Board. 

Javier Aldape, Treasurer the parent of a York alumnus and a current student, has a wealth of experience in financial planning and analysis in the local agricultural industryJavier joined the Board in 2018 and he is the chair of the Finance Committee.
Kathleen Scarr, Secretary, parent of two York alumni, is the former CFO for Growers Express and related entities. She spent many years in public accounting, and joined the Board in 2015. Kathleen is Board Secretary as well as serving on the Committee for Trustees and Finance Committee.

Gary Ray, Immediate Past Chair, parent of two York graduates, is a lawyer and partner with Ottone Leach & Ray LLP in Salinas. Gary has served as Secretary of the Board, and was Chair of the Committee on Trustees and the Audit Committee. He joined the board in 2011.

Doug Key, Head of School started his career at York July of 2019 and comes to us with a wealth of knowledge from his twenty year experience in the independent school environment.


Tom Adcock ’89 is a Salinas native and President of the family-operated Alisal Water Corporation. Tom joined the Board in 2017 and brings to the Board a wealth of knowledge of the local area and the York community. In addition to using his background in chemical engineering at the office, Tom's experience in the water and wastewater industries has allowed him to assist local organizations like Rancho Cielo Youth Campus and Camp Pico Blanco. Tom serves on the Committee on Trustees.
Right Rev. Lucinda Beth Ashby is bishop of the Episcopal Church’s Diocese of El Camino Real, which serves 10,000 members in 42 congregations from Silicon Valley to San Luis Obispo County. Before serving as an ordained priest in Northern California and Idaho, Bishop Lucinda taught at Sacramento Country Day School, headed a private school in Sacramento, founded and built a school for Native American children in the Capay Valley, and served as a Chaplain to St. Michael’s Episcopal Day School in Carmichael, CA.  She has also taught at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (Episcopal Seminary) in Berkeley.
Norelle Boyce is originally from Australia, now resides in Monterey. She is the president of VisionSoft inc., has a B.S. in Computer Science and Business Honors from Latrobe University, Melbourne, Australia. She is a current parent of York student Amanda '22.
Marilyn Calciano is a community volunteer with a passion for helping children and others in need. Previously, Marilyn was a Vice President of Morgan Stanley and Company in New York. She also worked as a Management Consultant at Andersen Consulting in New York. Marilyn serves as the President of the Board of the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County. She has served on several other non-profit boards including Hospice of Santa Cruz where she held many offices including President. She is the founder of the Family Giving Circle Fund of the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County.

Alfred Diaz-Infante, parent of a 2016 York graduate, is the President & CEO of Community Housing Improvement Systems and Planning Association, Inc., (CHISPA) and CHISPA Housing Management, Inc. (CHMI). He serves as a trustee on several nonprofit and educational institution boards, and was a member of the Monterey County Planning Commission from 1993-1998. Alfred is Chair of the Committee on Trustees and is a member of the Executive Committee.

Dan Fenton ‘76 is a partner with Strategic AdvisoryGroup LLC, a national consulting firm. Dan and his family have been long-time supporters of York. Dan’s father, the late Lewis Fenton, was a founding board member and Dan joined the Board in 2002. Dan is Chair of the Diversity Advisory Committee.
David Foster-Bates worked in finance and investment banking on both U.S. coasts and was the President of Robert Talbott, Inc. In 2004, David and his wife Julia founded Equine Assisted Therapy at Mountain Valley, a pediatric therapy clinic using horses in treatments, and today he serves on many local Boards including the Cypress Fire Protection District. David joined the Board in 2016 and serves on the Committee on Trustees.
Scott Fujita, Head of School, All Saints Day School joined the Board of Trustees at All Saints’ Day School in February 2016, and in August 2018, he was hired as the school’s Director of Athletics. In the summer of 2019, Scott took on his new role at All Saints’ as its next Head of School. Scott also serves on the Board of Gleason Life Skills Sports Clinics, where he co-directs and helps design curriculum for its summer camp programs in New Orleans, LA.
Debbie Hale is the Executive Director of the Transportation Agency for Monterey County. She brings knowledge of and commitment to the local community through her career in local planning and transportation, as well as her volunteer work with Rotary. Debbie joined the Board in 2018 and serves on the Committee on Trustees.
Greg Jamison is a veteran sports executive and the founder and president of Jamison Entertainment. He is the former president and CEO of the San Jose Sharks and serves on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards. Greg is a member of the Advancement Committee.
Giff Lehman, parent of a 2001 York alumna, is the founding partner of Integris Wealth Management, a financial planning and investment advisory firm based in Monterey. Prior to founding Integris, Giff worked as an institutional investment  professional in New York City. He joined the Board in 2017 bringing with him more  than two decades of finance experience. He serves on the Finance Committee.
Ben Nurse is a veteran commercial and residential real estate broker and property manager. Ben joined the Board in 2016 and serves on the Advancement Committee. 
Matt Simis '88 is the Director of Strategy for Tanimura & Antle, a fresh-vegetable grower-shipper headquartered in Spreckels.  He joined the board in 2013 as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee and is currently the Co-Chair.
Ana Toledo is an attorney at Noland, Hamerly, Etienne & Hoss in Salinas. Her practice focuses on labor and employment law. Ana serves on the National Steinbeck Center Board of Trustees, and the Center for Community Advocacyís Board of Directors. She is new to the Board this year.

Jerry Traynor, has led independent, international, and public schools for more than 35 years in a variety of administrative positions. He has served on nonprofit boards and is currently an active board member for the Carmel Rotary Club. Jerry joined the Board in 2015 and is a member of the Finance Committee.


Brenda Aronowitz is a lifelong educator and author who has taught at the secondary and university levels. Brenda retired in 2007 after serving York nearly 30 years as a humanities teacher and Assistant Head of School. Brenda’s two daughters and two stepsons attended York. She joined the board in 2011.
Peggy Downes Baskin is an author, lecturer, and retired professor of political science. Her former husband, the late Chuck Downes, was Head of School from 1966 to 1974, and her daughter, Cammy Torgenrud, is a member of the York faculty. Peggy and her husband, Jack Baskin, are long-time supporters of York and a number of college-level programs. Peggy joined the board in 2006.
Jim Tunney, is an author, motivational speaker, former teacher and school principal. He was interim Head of York in 1993-94.
Steven Webster is a marine biologist and a founder of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Steven joined the Board in 1979 and has served in his emeritus advisory role since 2005.


Scot Johnson 
is the faculty representative to the Board. Scot  has been teaching math and physics at York for the past 17 years. He is currently the 11th grade dean, serves on the Admission Committee, coaches the JETS engineering club, is a member of the Safety Committee, and was part of the Head of School Transition Committee last year.

Kate Popky ’21 is the student representative to the Board and her involvement throughout the York community allows her to portray her peers' opinions accurately.
